Comforter or duvet cover? A comforter is filled and ready to use out of the bag — simplest if you want one purchase and one decision. A duvet cover is a slipcover for an insert you already own, so it washes easily and lets you change the look seasonally without buying a whole new bed.
Layering a bed that looks made even when it isn't: one neutral comforter, two pillow covers in different textures, and one throw folded at the foot. Three layers is usually enough; the fourth starts to look like a showroom.
Care: wash cotton and cotton-blend bedding cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low. Linen softens with every wash and is meant to look slightly rumpled. Faux fur and wool throws should be washed cold and air dried flat — heat flattens the pile permanently.
