A kitchen gets used more than any other room in the house, which is why the things in it should be worth looking at.

Kitchen and cooking at Mulberry Sage is built around natural materials that earn their place on the counter — Mediterranean olive wood utensil sets, boards and canisters, acacia wood serving pieces, woven storage baskets, ceramic canisters, stoneware mugs and bowls, and enameled cast iron in small everyday sizes.

What olive wood does that plastic doesn't: it's dense and close-grained, so it resists staining and holding onto odors — garlic one night doesn't turn up in the sauce the next. It also doesn't scratch nonstick pans the way metal utensils do, and it looks good enough to leave out in a crock instead of hiding in a drawer.

Counter or cupboard: pieces here are chosen to stay visible. A utensil holder, a bread board leaned against the backsplash and a canister set do more for a kitchen's look than any amount of decorating, because they're things you reach for anyway.

Care: hand wash wood in warm soapy water, dry immediately, and oil it with food-grade mineral oil every few weeks. Ceramic canisters and stoneware are dishwasher-safe. Never put wood or cast iron in the dishwasher.
